Agentic automation took center stage at UiPath FORWARD this year, but while this innovation is clearly game-changing, what exactly does that mean for your business?
Here are the answers to some common questions:
What is agentic automation?
Agentic automation leverages agentic AI – software “agents” powered by Generative AI (GenAI) and other advanced AI capabilities – to take autonomous action. In his keynote address at FORWARD, UiPath Founder and CEO Daniel Dines explained that the value of agentic lies in its potential to efficiently tackle the long chain of activities which make up the complex and differentiated business processes across industries.
Think of it as software robots with extremely high levels of cognitive skills, bridging gaps that once required human intervention.
Agents take AI-powered automation to a new level of autonomy, possessing the ability to perceive their environment, reason and ask questions, recognize patterns, and plan and execute actions to achieve a specific goal. Unlike robots that need people to tell them exactly what to do within a defined process, agents can act autonomously in understanding, structuring, and completing their work.
What does that mean in practical terms?
A human worker can, for instance, give a text prompt asking for a detailed report based on data from two different systems that includes detailed analyses, recommended actions, and rationale for these actions. The agent, on its own, determines what must be done, where the information is found in different systems, how the information needs to be analyzed, etc. The agent then builds out and executes a work process.
Does agentic automation replace RPA?
Quite the opposite. Agentic automation deploys both robots and agents to optimize processes from start to finish: Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for automating rules-based tasks, while agents complete complex business processes that were previously beyond the reach of automation due to agents’ unprecedented ability to act independently, adapt to changes, and make informed decisions.
While RPA excels at automating repetitive, transactional work, agentic automation empowers business to automate entire workflows – even those involving dynamic decision-making and complex processes.

UiPath also announced the availability of Autopilot for everyone: a cross-platform, GenAI conversational agent that can help workers use UiPath’s agents and workflow automation tools to complete complex tasks like analyzing documents or getting answers that require analysis of organizational data.

Agent Builder was previewed for FORWARD attendants and will be available for preview across the UiPath community in December 2024.

Intelligent auto healing for more resilient robots
Intelligent auto healing for RPA is another UiPath innovation spotlighted at FORWARD that we are excited to bring to our clients. It increases the value of automation support teams by accelerating resolution when process exceptions cause robots to break.
The result: continuous improvement of automation deployments and increased uptime for our customers.
Automation is not a “set it and forget it” investment. Something as simple as a new column on a spreadsheet can create a process exception for a rules-based bot, requiring developer support to get it back on track. As organizations increasingly use cloud-based applications, bots also often encounter significant changes in application interfaces for which they aren’t coded, which can cause automation to break.
Unfortunately, this can create downtime in mission-critical business processes as the support team identifies the root cause, determines a corrective action, and implements the solution.
At FORWARD, UiPath highlighted intelligent auto-healing capabilities launching early next year that will significantly minimize downtime for bots, enabling robots to identify the root cause of their issue and recommend corrective actions like code changes. Even better, the bot writes the suggested code changes, which are then sent to developers for validation and, if approved, on to production.
The accuracy rate of these bot-driven code changes: an impressive 90%.
With an increased ability to resolve process exceptions faster, automation development teams gain greater bandwidth to focus on innovation.
